December 2009: Benefit Ice Hockey Game
Bower Hill Volunteer Fire Department, in association with Pittsburgh Metro FOOLS, is holding a Charity Hockey Game on Sunday, December 27, 2009 at 6:00 p.m. at the Mount Lebanon Ice Rink, 900 Cedar Boulevard, to support the Bryan Pritchard Transplant fund. The Pittsburgh Metro FOOLS Firefighters team will play the Blue Knights Police team. Tickets are $5.00 each. Children under 12 admitted free. Call 412-221-3497 for tickets or information. November 2009: Thanks for Helping a Firefighter
Thanks to everyone who attended the Spaghetti Dinner on November 15th to aid BHVFD Lieutenant Bryan Pritchard. Thanks to your support Bryan will be able to offset about $4,000 in medical costs.

November 2009: Scott Township Christmas Tree Light-Up Night
Join Bower Hill Volunteer Fire Department and the rest of the Scott Township community at the annual Christmas Tree Light-Up Night on Thursday, December 3, 2009 at the new amphitheater in Scott Township Park.

November 2009: Breakfast With Santa
Santa Claus will be stopping at the fire station on Sunday, December 6th. We'll be having breakfast with Santa that day from 10:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. There's no admission charge, there are no reservations needed, and Santa's Workshop will be open with crafts for the kids. The day includes a pancake breakfast and a photo with Santa. If you have any questions, call the station at 412-221-3497.

October 2009: Annual Fund Drive
The 2010 Bower Hill VFD Fund Drive is now underway. Information was mailed to all known occupied residences in the service area during the week of October 12, 2009. If you have not received a brochure by November 1, 2009, call the station at 412-221-3497 and leave a message, and we will get one to you. Please leave a call-back number, so we can confirm the information with you. Thanks to everyone who has supported Bower Hill VFD in its 86 years of service. Your fund drive donation includes your subscription to Scott Township EMS.

October 2009: Benefit Spaghetti Dinner at Bower Hill VFD
Bower Hill Volunteer Fire Department will host a spaghetti dinner on Sunday, November 15, 2009 from 2:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. in the BHVFD Memorial Hall. All proceeds will be used to defray the medical expenses of department lieutenant Bryan Pritchard, who is awaiting a kidney and pancreas transplant. The dinner includes spaghetti and meatballs, tossed salad, bread and butter, dessert and a beverage. Advance tickets are $7.00 for adults (age 12 and over), $5.00 for children age 4 to 11, and free for children age 3 and under. Tickets at the door are $8.00 for adults, $6.00 for children age 4 to 11, and free for children age 3 and under. Meals are available for eat-in or take-out. September 2009: Congratulations to Department Officer
Bower Hill Volunteer Fire Department offers congratulations to department captain Jason Dolence and his wife Kim on the birth of their daughter Morgan Paige on September 29th. Everyone is doing well.

September 2009: Thanks for Supporting Scott Township Firefighters
Thanks to everyone who attended the Cash Bash. We hope you had a good time. Your participation helps support the Scott Township fire departments all year long. Each department received $4,048 in proceeds from the event. Thanks to all firefighters who helped in any capacity during the event.

September 2009: Condolences to Life Members
Bower Hill Volunteer Fire Department extends its condolences to Life Members Bob and Joanne Berdnik on the death of Karl Berdnik, Bob's father, who died on September 12, 2009.  Karl was president of Bower Hill VFD in 1944 - 45 and held other offices in the department before retiring to Florida in the 1960s. We will remember him as our brother firefighter, and a lifelong supporter of Bower Hill Volunteer Fire Department. May he rest in peace.

September 2009: Fire Prevention Week Open House, October 11, 2009
The 2009 Annual Open House will be held Sunday, October 11, 2009 from 12:00 noon to 4:00 PM at the fire station. This year, we will feature:
Because the Open House is so close to the beginning of the annual fund drive, will will not have a door-to-door raffle. A 50/50 raffle will be held at the Open House.

August 2009: Cash Bash
Bower Hill Volunteer Fire Department will host a Cash Bash fund raiser for the three Scott Township fire departments in the BHVFD Memorial Hall on Saturday, September 19th beginning at 6:00 PM. Tickets are $20 each, and are available from Scott Township firefighters. For more information, call the fire station at 412-221-3497 on Wednesday evenings from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM.

Distinguished Dobermans Rescue Inc. will host a Craft Show fundraiser at Bower Hill VFD on Saturday, September 5, 2009 from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm in the BHVFD Memorial Hall. Crafters and vendors need to apply to DDR by Friday, August 7, 2009. There is a nonrefundable table fee of $35 due with the application, and 5% of Crafters' sales go to DDR at the end of the day. July 2009: In Memory of Joe Besso, Life Member and Past President
Bower Hill Volunteer Fire Department extends its condolences to the family of Life Member Joe Besso, who died July 5, 2009 at the age of 69. Joe served as president of Bower Hill VFD for three years, from 1984-1986, and as a department trustee for many years. A Mass of Christian Burial with firefighter honors was celebrated at Our Lady of Grace Church, where Joe was a long-time usher, on July 9, 2009. We will remember him as a dedicated and dynamic member of the department and the community, and our cherished brother firefighter. May he rest in peace.

June 2009: Scott Township Public Safety Fair, June 20th, Scott Park
Join Bower Hill VFD, Glendale Hose Company No. 1, East Carnegie VFD, Scott Township EMS, Scott Township Police and Scott Township Emergency Management for the second annual Community Public Safety Fair in Scott Park on Saturday, June 20, 2009 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. for fire and life safety information and demonstrations, home security and personal protection information, and community awareness. And for fun the park, of course.

May 2009: Allegheny County Volunteer Firefighters Convention in Heidelberg, June 7th to June 13th
Heidelberg VFD is hosting the annual Allegheny County Volunteer Firefighters Convention during the week of June 7, 2009. See Heidelberg VFD's convention page for information on locations and times of events. Come cheer on Scott Township's firefighters in the Battle of the Barrel competition on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday at 6:00 p.m. each night at the Heidelberg fire station lot. The convention parade will start at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 13th, and will proceed from Collier Avenue down Ellsworth Avenue to First Street, ending at Heidelberg VFD's station.

May 2009: Benefit Music Festival at Scott Park, June 7th
The "Smooth Vibe Charity Music Festival" to benefit the family of Edward Smith will be held at Scott Park on Sunday, June 7, 2009 from 10:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. Mr. Smith was killed in a motorcycle crash in Scott Township in March. The event will feature various local bands; refreshements; a charity bike run; and other family entertainemnt. It is sponsored by the Scott Township Police Association. April 2009: In Memory of George Flood, Life Member and Past President
Bower Hill Volunteer Fire Department extends its condolences to the family of Life Member George Flood, who died April 25, 2009 at the age of 87. George served as president of Bower Hill VFD for nine years, from 1969-1973, 1978-1979, and 1981-1982, and in various other line and executive office positions. He was instrumental in coordinating the back office for the department Bingo, and provided many interesting bits of information for the history of the department on this web site. We will remember him as a dedicated member of the department and the community, and our cherished brother firefighter. May he rest in peace.

April 2009: Thanks for Attending the Fish Fry
The 2009 Fish Fry was a success once again, and we thank all who attended. Special thanks to all of the department members who worked so hard to make the event a success. And again, thanks to everyone who attended. We hope you enjoyed everything. Your support of this important fund-raiser helps us provide emergency service all year long. We hope to see you next year. In case you're wondering, that'll be Friday, April 2, 2010.

March 2009: Night at the Races at Bower Hill VFD
East Carnegie Volunteer Fire Department is holding a "Night at the Races" fundraiser at Bower Hill on March 28, 2009.Doors open at 6:00 pm, with the first race at 7:30 pm Admission is open to those 21 years of age and over. February 2009: Fish Fry!
Bower Hill VFD once again presents the annual Good Friday Fish Fry. Advance phone orders will be taken Thursday, April 9th from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. and Friday, April 10th from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. at 412-221-3497. Doors open at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, April 10th, and close at 7:00 p.m. or whenever we run out of food, whichever comes first. See the Fish Fry page for the menu and prices. The Junior Fire Brigade will have a bake sale at the fish fry for your dessert. This event is an important fund-raiser for the department, and even more, it's a great community-building event. Come and meet your friends and neighbors for good food and good company.

February 2009: Congratulations to New Members
Members Mike Missonak and Rich Chilton have successfully completed their probationary membership period, and were moved to regular voting membership at the February 2009 meeting of the department. Member Rob Losekamp was granted Life Member status. Congratulations and continued best wishes.

February 2009: Condolences to a Life Member
Bower Hill Volunteer Fire Department extends its condolences to Life Member Barb Mekonis and and her family on the death of her husband, John Mekonis, a former member, who died on Tuesday, February 10, 2009. We will remember John as a brother firefighter and lifelong supporter of Bower Hill VFD. May he rest in peace.

Any resident who did not respond to this mailing will receive a second request, with the information being mailed during the week of February 8, 2009.
