Life Members

Bower Hill Volunteer Fire Department honors members who have devoted at least twenty consecutive years of service to the citizens of Scott Township with the title of Life Member. Members in this category of membership retain their membership in the department regardless of meeting, call, or drill attendance, though in order to be eligible to vote or hold officership positions, these standards still must be met.
In years past, the department regarded Life Members as retired from active firefighting, and prohibited Life Members from holding any line office in the department. For this reason, the department did not automatically confer Life Membership on any member with twenty years of service; the member had to request it.
Though Life Members are no longer regarded as retired from firefighting, Life Membership is still conferred only at the request of the member. The Active and Associate roster includes several firefighters with more than twenty continuous years of service, just as the Life Member roster includes several firefighters who still respond to emergency calls.
As the Bower Hill community ages, so does the Bower Hill Fire Department. On the one hand, this means that there's something of a lack of young, strong and aggressive firefighters. On the other hand, this means that there's no lack of skilled, trained and experienced firefighters, with the knowledge and understanding to undertake any firefighting, rescue, or emergency service task.
The department is always looking for new members today, to become the Life Members of the future. We want to preserve our tradition of service even as we honor those who have upheld it in years past. If you would like to become a part of this tradition, click here and get a membership application.
