1973 Combination Mini-Pumper and Light Rescue (1973 - 1992)

In the early 1970s, the "mini-pumper" became all the rage. The idea was sound: most "structure fires" are actually room contents fires that can be extinguished with less than 100 gallons of water, flowing at 90 gallons per minute. It would seem to make good sense to use a small, fast, minimally equipped pumper that costs tens of thousands of dollars less than a Class A pumper as a first response or "quick attack" pumper. In fact, it was the same concept Bower Hill had employed for years with its booster car/squad/ambulance combination. When the time came to replace the old GMC, the department switched from the booster car to the mini-pumper. It replaced two vehicles: the 1960 GMC and the 1962 Jeep. With a dedicated ambulance now on the roster, that capability was no longer needed in the new piece. Since the first-out Class A pumper had a six-man seating capacity, there was less need for a squad. That pumper also carried an electrical inverter that lessened the need for the power plant. The only capabilty that was still unmet was for a light rescue. This apparatus was designed with that purpose in mind. It carried all the hand tools and the Porto-Power previously carried by the 1962 Jeep.

As
delivered, the vehicle was equipped with a booster reel, a standard
hose bed, and minimal external equipment. In this photo, a portable
trash pump, used in salvage and flood response operations, is in the
hose bed.

The department eliminated booster reels in the 1980s. Three crosslays were added in the space formerly occupied by the reel. A wooden hose bed extension made room for a four-bottle air cascade in the original hose bed, with supply line above.
Three SCBAs were installed above the street side cabinet. One of the crosslays was plumbed from the old booster reel line, and the second, a 1 inch "cabinet line," from a wye on the main discharge. The third was not preconnected. A new 250 gallon booster tank was installed in 1979. The locomotive horns are not part of the vehicle. They're there during parades only, and belong to the firefighter in the driver's seat in this (and the bottom) photo.

A stokes rescue basket and high-angle rescue gear were added in the 1980s. This preparedness paid off, and the equipment and the rescue training of the firefighters proved to be quite useful on a few occasions.
