1977 Triple Combination Pumper (1977 - 2008)
1977 ALF

Bower Hill VFD's longest serving engine to date was delivered on August 13, 1977 and removed from service on December 15, 2007. It was a groundbreaking vehicle in every way. It was the first diesel-powered vehicle for the department, it was the first to carry 3-1/2" supply hose, and the first with Mattydale-style crosslays and high side compartments. It was truly state-of-the-industry in its day, and it served superbly for 30 years. Even as an antique, it remained a fully capable attack pumper. The short wheelbase made it easy to handle, and the hose bed was still within reach from the ground by most firefighters. It was the last pumper to date to have a ground-level pump panel.

1977 ALF on Lindsay

In its original form, it had a booster reel. This wasn't very accessable, and it was only rarely used. In the photo above, one change has already been made. Originally, the valve on the front suction was a Keystone butterfly valve. This tended to leak, and was replaced by the screw gate valve shown here. This vehicle also introduced a new shade of red to the department. Earlier vehicles varied from the dark, almost maroon of the 1957 pumper to the deep, rich enamels of the 1960 combination ambulance and booster car and the 1962 Jeep power plant and rescue. This new engine was painted in a bright white-over-crimson. This color combination would eventually be used on all BHVFD vehicles through the 1980s, until the arrival of the 1992 engine.

In later years, "man saver" safety bars were added at the jump seat positions, and walkaway SCBA brackets were installed on the jump seats. The Humat hydrant valve became standard on all BHVFD pumpers, and the portable deluge gun provided versatility. The booster reel was removed in the early 1980s, and the area where it had been mounted was converted to a dunnage area for foam containers, hose to supply the deluge gun, utility wrenches, and a first aid kit.

The vehicle replaced the 1957 American LaFrance pumper, and assumed its radio call sign of "Engine 4-B."

JB Res-Q rebuild

This was also the last BHVFD engine to have a mild carbon steel body. Rust began to be a problem. The unit was given a complete body and mechanical rehabilitation by JB Res-Q of Moon Township in 1996. Scene lights were installed and full gates replaced the safety bars in the bucket positions. In station, 2007

The unit was renumbered from Engine 4B to Engine 255-3 in 1998 to conform with the new county-wide station numbering. In May 2006, this was changed to 255 Engine 3, but the vehicle was not relettered. In its last years of service, this became the RIT (rapid intervention team) vehicle and was used for parades and ceremonial functions. It remained a capabile firefighting piece, however, and performed as the manufacturer intended at the fire at Great Southern Shopping Center in Kirwan Heights on September 11, 2006. It was removed from service on December 15, 2007 and sold on January 19, 2008 to a private owner, a life member of the department, who intends to restore it to its original appearance.
