Bower Hill had not had a Squad vehicle since 1973, when the 1960 GMC was sold. Larger seating capacities on the engines seemed to make it unecessary. The problem was that the engines were large, more difficult to drive, and far more expensive to operate. In 1995, BHVFD again purchased a Squad. The 1995 Chevrolet pickup had four-wheel drive, a crew cab, and a transverse storage box in the bed. It was ideal for transportation to fire schools and meetings. It also brought additional personnel to fire scenes.


When it arrived, the vehicle was known as Squad 4. It would be designated Squad 255 when the department adopted the county's station numbering plan in 1998.



This vehicle served many other useful functions in support of the department. It was used extensively for responses to Carbon Monoxide alarm calls.


The bed was used to carry hose and dirty equipment back from fire calls, or to transport portable pumps and hard suction hose to pumping details. The transverse bed box had more than adequate capacity, but access was difficult for a firefighter in full turnout gear because of the reach required.
