Initially, Bower Hill and Glendale supplied their existing ambulances to Scott Township EMS, and each department maintained ownership of one vehicle. As call volumes increased, the departments decided to purchase a third ambulance.  This vehicle was jointly purchased and co-owned by the departments.


The vehicle was purchased used from a local ambulance service. In STEMS service it was known as "Medic 743." It was used as a back-up vehicle when one of the primary ambulances were down for repairs. When STEMS added a second on-duty crew, this became the second crew's vehicle. Though it was a product of the same manufacturer as the new STEMS ambulances, it was much smaller and was configured very differently.



The ambulance was much smaller than any that either department had owned for many years. It was easier to handle for drivers, but the working room in the patient compartment was a little cramped, and storage space was barely adequate.
