255 Engine 3 - 2008 Triple Combination Pumper

In 2007, the American LaFrance pumper reached the thirty year old mark, and the department's newest pumper would reach the ten year old mark in 2008. To maintain the community's ISO fire protection rating, Bower Hill purchased a new pumper. The apparatus planning committee investigated the products of seven manufacturers and awarded the bid in January of 2007 to Sutphen Corporation of Columbus, Ohio. Over the next fifteen months, the vehicle took shape in Sutphen's plant.
On March 3, 2008, the apparatus commitee traveled to the Columbus, Ohio factory for the mid-build inspection of the progress of the vehicle. The chassis, body and pump module are all in the assembly building. The chassis is seen in the foreground in this photo, with the body in the background (with the red and yellow safety stripes). During the construction process, the installation of the body and pump module on the chassis was filmed by crews from Discovery Networks for an episode of "How It's Made."
The committee returned on April 19, 2008 for the final inspection. The vehicle is now complete, and only the small equipment needs to be installed. Summers Brothers Manufacturing in Springfield, Ohio mounted the equipment to the department's specifications.
The engine was delivered to the station on May 7, 2008. Preparations began immediately for installing the fire hose, air masks, and loose equipment. The water tank was filled and the unit was prepared for service.
In order to keep the wheelbase down, but to maintain the advantages of the top-mounted pump panel, this engine has an elevated side-mounted pump panel, called "Command View" by Sutphen. It keeps the operator away from the dangers associated with a ground-level pump panel - traffic and hose lines - and allows a good view of the scene regardless of apparatus placement.
Sutphen Corporation displayed this engine at the Lancaster County Fire Expo in Harrisburg, May 16, 17 and
18, 2008. It entered service with Bower Hill on July 5, 2008, after all operators
competed in-service training.
