1926 Combination Chemical Car and Hose Wagon (1926 - 1944)

On
Thanksgiving Day, 1926, this Combination Chemical Car and Hose Wagon on
a 1926 International Model S chassis arrived at the fire station. This
photo, from the Wisconsin Historical Society Archives (used with
permission, Image ID 49769) is the builder's photo, taken at an unknown
location somewhere in the Pittsburgh area - the photo is inscribed
with the date, and the notation, "Pittsburgh" - on December 15th of
that year. The vehicle is obviously not yet in service on this
date. The chemical hose and small equipment is still not installed.

The
next summer, back in Bower Hill, Montgomery Avenue is still unpaved.
This photo was taken from the front of the fire station. The houses on
Montgomery Avenue are still easy to identify, eighty years later,
though none has a front picket fence in 2007.

Eighty
years have taken their toll on this photo, also taken in front of the
fire station on Montgomery Avenue. The thirteen men in these photos may
well have been the original Bower Hill firefighters.

A front-end view of the vehicle at an unidentified parade shows that it still had the capability to be hand-cranked for starting, though electric starting was standard by this time. Note that there's no windshield, and the warning bell is right over the driver's left shoulder.

This photo appears to have been taken about where the corner of Knox Street and Roosevelt Street is today. The child in the light suit is Karl Oelschlager, who would grow up to be fire chief through the late 1950s and again in 1966, and department president in 1989. In 1929, when this photo was taken, "Drum Major" was an officer position. Albert Gastgeb (standing at front left) held it that year.
