1957 Triple Combination Pumper (1957 - 1977)
Hose cart, 1924

Bower Hill VFD entered the modern firefighting age with this 1957 American LaFrance Invader 750 gallon per minute pumper. With the five-seat cab, riding on the tailboard soon became a thing of the past. The fully-enclosed compartments were a new feature on the American LaFrance 800 series. The booster reel was mounted at the rear step, and the attack hose, both 1.5" and 2.5" was mounted in slide-out trays in the rear hose bed. The hose bed was deep and low - something modern builders would do well to emulate.

Though Scott Township was completely protected by fire hydrants by 1960, the department still trained on drafting from unpressurized sources. This drill was held right about where the Main Street driveway entrance to the fire station is today.

Though it was state-of-the-industry for 1957, this engine would seem small today. The human scale of the compartments, hose bed, and controls made it easy to use. The same could not be said about its ease of driving. It had a dual-ignition 12 cylinder engine (two spark plugs per cylinder), a non-synchronized manual transmission with a two-speed rear, and a steering wheel with a diameter of about a yard. It was needed, though, because there was no power steering. The vehicle had a turning radius of 28 feet. There were power brakes: hydraulic, not air.

This vehicle remained the deparment's best-liked engine, even after the purchase of the new Ford in 1970. It certainly was the best-looking. In 1970, the old 12-cylinder engine threw a rod on Vanadium Road while responding to a call to assist Kirwan Heights. Parts were no longer available. Through the efforts of Doe Padgelek, who worked for Chartiers Valley School District, the department was able to obtain a Ford V-8 of about the same size and a little more horsepower than the American LaFrance V-12, from a school bus that was being scrapped. Department members removed the engine from the bus and installed it in the fire engine, and did all the associated work. It worked. The vehicle ran for another seven years, with the Ford engine being rebuilt once, when it cracked the crankshaft at almost exactly the same place on Vanadium Road where the original V-12 had failed, with the same driver at the wheel.

Not long after Bower Hill received this vehicle, Allegheny County began to dispatch local fire departments by radio. Bower Hill was "Station 4" on this system. This unit became "Engine 4-B" and retained that designation throughout its service life.
